Developing Online Relationships

Chatrooms on the Internet can be very deceiving and surprisingly addicting. The books talks about how relationships develop and escalate online. On one chatroom 61% formed a personal relationship online, most being friendships. 10% of them were romantic with 64% saying their relationships were intimate. That is amazing to me how for some it is easier to meet people online. Obviously the online dating sites have skyrocketed in the last couple of years. I had a friend who would make friends online and start talking to them on the phone, then meeting in person. We were very wary of this because it isn't very safe. Eventually she stopped because the guys she met were a little weird. If we ever are talking to a stranger online, we need to take extra precautions to stay safe and keep boundaries.

You’re right, we do need to take precautions if we talk to or end up meeting someone online. I’ve seen many shows and read stories about online meetings that go bad in person. It scary and for women, we shouldn’t always disclose so much personal information until it feels safe. And yes, I can relate to them being addicting. Because it seems like if one online chat doesn’t work out, then there is always another that could be found so quickly. I think it’s easier to meet people online because people are more themselves and easier to talk to you. Like for instance, there is no real fear I think of being rejected because there is a conversation out there that everyone can find themselves in. Its like its easier maybe cuz no one can see you just yet. LOL. I think it’s a little scary/creepy though how many online dating sites there are now, but I guess its an easier way to find someone you really match up with. But luckily not all people online are scary. I have two co-workers who met their husbands online and both couples are actually a really good match. Good call though about stopping communication with the weird guy, your gutt/instinct feelings are telling you something like that, its probably true.
